This topic is related to the previous post when we were talking about connecting to the existing Nutanix AHV appliance, but what should we do if we completely lose it or we need to restore the previous configuration? – The answer is simple: we can restore its configuration from the backup.
In this article, we will look at how to restore Nutanix AHV Backup Proxy from the configuration backup.
Although restoring the Proxy Appliance is not a common task, it can happen, and we need to be prepared. For example, after accidentally deleting jobs, misconfigurations, or even a dead Proxy VM.
To restore configuration, we need to back it up first.
Nutanix AHV Backup Proxy configuration backup performs during regular VBR backup, which is enabled in the configuration backup settings menu:

Now let’s briefly look at my Veeam infrastructure. As you can see, I have a few configured Nutanix jobs:

Next, I will remove the existing AHV Proxy:

Marking the corresponding checkbox, we are deleting all existing jobs and appliance VMs from the Nutanix cluster.
All existing backups will move to the orphaned section, meaning that backup files are not related to any job:

After that, I deployed a new AHV Proxy. I will not describe how to do that, but you can find info in my previous articles.
Restoring configuration
Before you begin: If you are restoring configuration on an existing working proxy, stop and disable all backup jobs that use this proxy.
When the proxy is deployed, we need to right-click on it and select the option “Restore configuration”:

First, we need to select a backup repository, used for storing configuration backups, and select the configuration backup file:

Nutanix AHV configuration backups are stored in the corresponding AHV folder inside of the VeeamConfigBackup folder.
Next, we will see the information about the selected configuration backup:

If the configuration backup is password-protected, we need to provide the password:

Moving forward, we need to decide on restoring local users and session history:

The last step is to provide the current Nutanix AHV Proxy credentials. You use those credentials during appliance deployment:

Click restore, and observe the process of applying a configuration:

After restoring, check out the backup jobs:

As you can see, we have restored all jobs. But in the previous screenshot, you may notice that there are still only orphaned jobs.
Do not worry; backup files will attach to the backup jobs after they start:

In conclusion:
This is a simple example of how configuration backup works and how to use it. Please read the documentation for more useful information.
Do not forget to enable the configuration backup. Enabling the configuration backup can save a significant amount of time in the event of an emergency. Consider making a backup each time you make major changes in configuration, which can affect your backups.
